Physical Fitness for Wrestling

All of the school sports require some level of physical fitness on the part of the athletes. However, wrestling requires a very high level of fitness in order to participate in the sport.

In the sport of wrestling, all components of physical fitness are required. Wrestling requires stamina, strength, flexibility, balance, and physical awareness.

Stamina Training

Most coaches agree that stamina is probably the most important component of physical fitness required by wrestlers. Many students, who join the wrestling team for the first time, often leave the team after the first week of practice because they are not prepared for the work that they must put in to build their stamina.
On the other hand, we have found that many of our wrestlers, who did not appear to be strong athletes, improved their conditioning and coordination, even if they did not win many matches. This is another good reason for many students to join the wrestling team. No student, who is willing to work, will be turned away from the wrestling team.

A highly recommended form of training for wrestlers could be high intensity interval training, HIIT, or variable intensity train, where you change the intensity of your workout from moderate to high.

Strength and Power

Although stamina usually determines the breaking point in a wrestling match, strength and power are also important for wrestlers. Strength is the ability to exert a maximum force while power is the ability to exert a moderate force explosively. You should consult with your Phys. Ed. Teacher or workout room supervisor for proper exercises for strength or power.
