Physical Fitness for Wrestling

When I wrestled in high school, it seemed that everyone on the team was physically fit. We were not fit because we were more conscious of our health than other students. The reason we were fit was because we had two hours of practice each day, five days a week! We could not help but get in shape, at least during the wrestling season.

At the Don Valley venue, I will be coaching three practices each week. However, if you are not in condition at the time of the first practice you might find the practices difficult and you might become discouraged from continuing the programme. Therefore, it is very important for each wrestler to engage in a fitness programme. You can do this on your own or you can workout with other wrestlers.

Wresting is a very intense sport. Many students drop out of wrestling because they were not prepared for the fitness level required to wrestle a full match. However, students who stay with the team and prepare themselves do enjoy the sport.
